This thesis retrospectively explored the therapeutic properties and applications of empathic critique within art therapy, particularly studying my own journey with critiques from academia and the realm of fine arts as well as operations working closely with diverse populations, including individuals with psychosis or psychotic symptoms and artists with intellectual developmental disorder. I used critique as a term to describe a structured feedback language and format; I often used empathy or empathic in combination with critique to indicate the therapeutic application and means of constructive communication. I focused on a positive, person-centered, trauma-informed, empathic critique approach within my practice. This approach was utilized when examining the effects and modifications of my understanding and applications of the critique method through my own life experiences as they were relevant to this study and the fields of art therapy, psychology, and psychiatry. The primary intention of this retrospective, heuristic self-study was to provide clinicians with a better understanding and means of communicating with their clients and an alternative intervention that is often overlooked. Additionally, this study provided insight and alternative means of communication relevant to all populations, consequently decreasing the frequency and extremity of internal and external isolation, involuntary hospitalizations or unjust arrests, and possible violence toward self and others.
