Coping is a response to stress and types of coping include: personal, social, environmental and religious. The purpose of this research was to measure different ways of spiritual coping among Emergency Department (ED) nurses; specifically, this research measured what type of coping ED nurses use and if it tends to be positive or negative coping. Nurses were recruited from a busy ED to complete a modified Spiritual Coping Questionnaire constituted of two scales: positive and negative spiritual coping. After two days of recruiting, 24 nurses completed the Spiritual Coping Questionnaire. Only two questions had replied for either rather accurate or very accurate and they included: "trying to be fair towards other people" and "trying to help other people" which is consistent with the profession of ED nurses. Two questions had replies for either very inaccurate or rather inaccurate included: "angry with God/Higher Being that he left me" and "seeking revenge on those who had hurt me." In rank order, the positive coping skills were highest for social (4.2+0.49), personal (3.6 +0.68), environmental (3.4+1.02) and religious was the lowest (1.6 +1.01). In rank order, the negative coping skills were highest for religious (2.8+1.3), personal (1.9+0.99), social (1.67+0.87). Overall positive was (3.5+0.49) and overall negative was (1.77+0.76). Thus, it is recommended that nursing education regarding spiritual care for ED nurses be provided to improve spiritual coping; in particular: Nursing Clinical Spirituality Education. Plus, it is recommended that ED leadership provide ED nurses access to nature during their work break because most nurses sought nature, which may improve their recognition of God's presence in their lives.
