Adolescence is a critical period for establishing adult eating behaviors and healthy self-regulation. While adolescents are believed to have increased autonomy over their food decisions with age, few studies have examined autonomy related to eating behavior. The purpose of this dissertation was to define and assess, for the first time, adolescents' eating autonomy. Throughout the three dissertation studies described here (qualitative, ecological momentary assessment analysis, and quantitative survey response analysis), we determined that adolescents' autonomy in the feeding domain is made up of adolescents' overall perceived control over their food choices and food self-selection as well as their level of engagement in a variety of food-related behaviors, such as frequency of eating alone compared to with parents, and behaviors related to planning for foods in the home, meal and snack preparation, and independent food purchasing. We found that adolescents have a high degree of food choice autonomy that does not vary by age. Future interventions could work to increase the quality of food choices when adolescents are selecting their own food both together and apart from other social influences.
