Social work with caregivers of Alzheimer's patients involves helping the caregivers to navigate and deal with the emotional, financial, and physical rigors that often accompany the caregiver role. In a society that continues to experience an increase in the numbers of dementia cases, there is a need for competent caregivers that provide the patients with quality care that meets their physical and emotional needs. Alzheimer's disease is a form of dementia that affects the patient's memory, thinking, and daily life. Little is known about their experiences as caregivers and what is needed to aid them in their caregiving experience. The study utilized an action research method of investigation, which involved a qualitative method of gathering data to receive a richer understanding of the phenomenon being studied. Forms of data gathering utilized for the study were interviews, a focus group, and field notes. The participants utilized for the study were male caregivers of Alzheimer's patients that provide or have provided informal care for their loved one. The participants were men whose ages ranged from 18 to 85 and have utilized male support groups to aid and support them with their caregiving experience. Findings of the study revealed that male caregivers and male caregivers of different ethnic/cultural groups, have unique issues and needs that have an impact on their ability to be effective caregivers. Recommendations for future research for social work practice are provided in the dissertation. Social workers, communities, and male caregivers can benefit from this study by receiving a better awareness of the importance of the need for social work services for male caregivers to aid them in their caregiving journey.
