Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the most common chronic respiratory condition in the United States with the chief complaint of dyspnea, with negative effects on functional exercise capacity and activities of daily living. Hyperinflation is a physiological consequence of advanced COPD which is due to weakened respiratory muscle strength, further contributing to complaints of dyspnea especially with physical activity. Ultimately, the muscles of inspiration must over compensate due to increases in respiratory need which leads to the development of inspiratory muscle fatigue. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to determine whether whole body vibration (WBV) is more effective than inspiratory muscle training (IMT) in increasing exercise capacity in patients with COPD. Methods: This meta-analysis was conducted using the PRISMA guidelines, Cinahl, Cochrane, PubMed, Science Direct Elsevier, and Google Scholar databases that were searched from November 2020 to November 2021. Review Manage Software by Cochrane was used to calculate the statistical analysis and generate the forest plots using the random effects model. Results: Ten studies were included in this meta-analysis. The primary analysis, there was a small effect size favoring WBV versus IMT. Results of the secondary analysis for quality of life, WBV was favored with a moderate effect size compared to IMT.
