Play therapy is a specialized modality of therapy that is used primarily in the treatment of minors. This approach to therapy is research based and has empirical evidence that supports its effectiveness in treating numerous clinical populations. Although play therapy is well- researched, there are certain factors that inhibit children from receiving this type of therapy. One of those factors is related to parental attitudes towards play therapy. Parental attitudes towards play therapy can be affected by many things, including: cultural-ethnic attitudes, parental attitudes toward psychotherapy in general, and parenting styles. Low socioeconomic status, access to care, and stigma surrounding engaging in behavioral health services are some barriers that can prevent some minorities from receiving care even though they have an increased need for care. A parent's perception about play therapy can also be a barrier if they do not understand or place value in the effectiveness of play therapy. A parent's openness to therapy may be influenced by institutional support from places such as hospitals or schools. The type of parenting style may influence a parent's acceptance of play therapy. The three types of parenting styles that will be explored are permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative. This study will specifically examine the relationship between the Authoritarian parenting style and attitudes towards therapy and play for children. Generational differences may impact stigma associated with therapy. This study will seek to fill the gap in literature concerning parental attitudes about play. Such as details of how and why parents would be resistant to play therapy. Whether different aged cohort parents are likely to bring their children into therapy. Also, there are gaps in the literature concerning characteristics of a parent such as parental styles may be more favorable to play therapy.
