Underrepresented communities with low-income, higher minority populations have increased exposure to social, political, and environmental injustices. However, these communities also have the unique opportunity to heighten their resiliency by being key advocates in the process of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR). This collaborative method unites all stakeholders for community improvement by using residents' knowledge and expertise as the center of a study, positioning them as the basis for research geared towards finding community-specific resolutions. This study was designed to highlight a community's role in resolving inequities through meaningful and substantive contributions. Using Charleston's Gadsden Green Community (GG) as a case study location, we interviewed 106 residents to determine their perspectives on living in Gadsden Green and found that local knowledge used for identifying these key issues was an essential step towards identifying challenges. From the data collected, five main community challenges that residents experience daily emerged: lacking a sense of community, maintenance issues, the need for community amenities, flooding, and crime/violence. The two primary topics of maintenance/housing issues and crime/violence were the focus for imminent and direct community improvements while this research was being finalized. To address crime/violence, the Charleston Police Department was implementing a substation and a connected access center on the Gadsden Green campus. For addressing maintenance/housing issues, date collected was compiled, analyzed, and presented to the City of Charleston. Further research is required through more thorough and in-depth surveys, but the beginning step of alerting decision-makers to the severity of the Gadsden Green units has been taken. Furthermore, the data will be used to design a curriculum for an Environmental Justice Academy (EJA) in the Gadsden Green community as initially planned in the beginning of this two-and-a-half-year study.
