This qualitative study explored the role of the language barrier in spiritual growth among non-English speaking Korean immigrant congregants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five pastors and twenty-two laypersons from local Korean immigrant churches in the Chicago-land area. The findings show various challenges to participants' immigrant lives with the language barrier as the primary challenging driver. Downward occupational mobility was evident among the consequences of the language barrier among the participants. Participants described their emotions and responses to the language barrier, including downward occupational mobility. The study also found that although the participants experience negative emotional responses as a result of the language barrier, its consequences, and immigrant life in general, it stimulated the participants to look at their spirituality with self-awareness. This research also studied the Korean immigrant churches' programs and leadership in regard to spiritual growth. The findings show that the participants appreciate the small group or faith community in the Korean immigrant churches because they help the participants grow spiritually. However, the participants' perception of the church leadership in terms of showing empathy for the congregants was negative. Further, the findings show that the participants are focused on seeking the core value of the Korean immigrant churches rather than becoming recipients of the benefits to immigrant life that the traditional immigrant churches offer. It is recommended that the immigrant churches pursue quality education for the leaders, ministers, and educators as well as the congregants using the model of Christ's mobility for the salvation of his people because he is the preeminent example of downward mobility. Future study could also include exploring the spirituality of marginality, developing contextualized education curricula, and extending the study to other non-English speaking immigrants in the United States.
