The global issue of access to safe water and sanitation continues to be a concern underdeveloped nations. An estimated 2.6 billion people, which is about 40 percent of the world's population, live without adequate access to safe water and good sanitation (WHO, 2010). Poor personal and household hygiene can lead to trachoma, diarrhea, dysentery and a number of other diseases. The specific objectives were: to understand the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of community members towards water, sanitation, and hygiene; to assess access to latrines and the availability of hand washing facilities at latrines; and to understand methods of collection from water supplies. Using 95% confidence level and 5% margin of error, the sample size was 400 people across Oyam district which were randomly selected within the sub county. Sub counties with larger population size were given higher numbers of respondents and sub- counties with smaller population size were given smaller numbers of respondents to ensure proportionality. The results of the study gives in depth insight into the situation in Oyam about the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) issues and may guide further actions. Recommendations based on the study are: Health, sanitation, and hygiene program implemented by Village Health Team (VHT) members in schools and local health centers; Focus on relaying more information about water treatment suggestions; Training for VHTs to relay information to community members about the importance of handwashing.
