Small and medium enterprises specializing in artificial intelligence technology are essential to the national and global economy during the 2010s. A key financial resource for sustaining technology entrepreneurs is venture capital funding; however, having a great product or service does not guarantee necessary support. This study investigates barriers leading to venture capital funding by using a qualitative multiple case study research method. The data results identify and reveal methods of overcoming these obstacles through conducting qualitative interviews with 11 entrepreneurs whose businesses are related to artificial intelligence. These entrepreneurs were successful in overcoming barriers and obtaining venture capital funding from 2015 to 2018. After analyzing interview transcriptions and with the assistance of the NVivo12 version coding software, the next step was developing major themes, indicating the research results. The analysis revealed the main barriers to obtaining venture capital funding as networking, business matching, strategic planning, and perseverance. Conducting the interviews during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 may have restricted the number of participants; however, data saturation supported the resulting themes. The importance of this study will improve the opportunity for small and medium enterprises to obtain the financial support to sustain and improve their businesses. This success will help strengthen the growth of artificial intelligence technology in the United States and improve the country's position in the global economy.
