This qualitative descriptive study explored the psychological experiences of the yips in baseball players. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore what the psychological experiences are of adult male baseball players who have had the yips. The individual zone of optimal functioning was the theoretical foundation for the study. Baseball players who experienced the yips were interviewed and an online questionnaire was a secondary source of data. Thematic analysis identified themes to answer the research questions: (a) How do baseball players describe their individual experiences of the phenomenon referred to as the yips? and (b) How do adult male baseball players describe the psychological experiences of the yips? Six themes answered the research questions: (a) Baseball players described the ball being thrown off target, such as the ball hitting the ground early, when the yips were occurring, (b) Baseball players described being shunned by other players, such as not wanting to throw with them, when the yips occurred, (c) Baseball players described being shamed by coaches, such as being spoken to in a negative manner, when the yips were occurring, (d) Baseball players described experiencing fear-based emotions, such as anxiety, when experiencing the yips, (e) Baseball players described experiencing reinvestment, such as thought patterns focused on the problem, when experiencing the yips, and (f) Baseball players described a connection between their emotional experiences and the physical experiences, such as noticing there was more stiffness with the anxiety when the yips occurred. Keywords: the yips, the yips in baseball, lost move syndrome, choking under pressure, dystonia, movement dystonia, pitching performance, performance and emotions, optimal functioning, individual zone of optimal functioning.
