This dissertation is composed of two sections, a critical paper and a collection of fiction. The critical section discusses how metafictional techniques in three works of Asian American fiction, How Much of These Hills Is Gold, The Sympathizer, and Insurrecto, contribute to ethical memory-making. The metafictional techniques in these texts draw attention to the inconsistencies between Asian American collective memory, American collective memory, and history as well as their constructed unreliability. The collection of fiction concentrates on Taiwanese, Taiwanese American, and Korean characters and their relationships with memory, such as being trapped by or disconnected from personal memory and cultural memory. Other themes, such as language difficulties, cultural disconnects, cultural gaps, and social anxiety are also investigated.
