This thesis essay and project center on different aspects of the Ocmulgee Old Fields in Georgia. The project has been writing portions of the updated administrative history for Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. Central to this project has been the inclusion of modern Muscogee (Creek) voices in the history of the park. My most important chapter for the history project focuses on just that, the relationship between the park and associated American Indians. Although the park has a previous history from 1986, there have been significant changes since then, perhaps the biggest being the renewed relationship between the park and the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Writing this chapter involved taking a step into the world of public history, working with the National Park Service to produce a meaningful and informative document. This work, coupled with the other chapters of the administrative history I have worked on, will provide a valuable guide to the National Park Service. The associated thesis essay goes further back in time, focusing on the role that Ocmulgee played in Creek culture. My essay focuses on proving that Ocmulgee is a site that was important to the Creek spiritually and politically. This goal presented some difficulties with minimal source material being prominent. Yet there is still sufficient source material to support my points. Through the use of treaties, accounts from the time, and archeological evidence, I demonstrate that the Creek held Ocmulgee in high regard during the colonial period as well as today.
