In this research, I examined the trade of shell wampum beads with the Dutch and how the trade facilitated the creation and maintenance of social memory among the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. I used ESRI ArcMap 10.8 to map the frequencies of wampum at late sixteenth and seventeenth century Haudenosaunee sites. I also used least cost path (LCP) analysis to map potential trade routes from the Haudenosaunee village sites to Dutch trading posts and Susquehannock sites to determine which trade routes may have been the most efficient. My results demonstrated that the Dutch construction of Fort Orange in 1624 likely facilitated the increase in access to wampum among the Haudenosaunee Nations. The Seneca may have had a greater amount of access to wampum due to more resources, such as beaver furs, to trade. The increase in wampum allowed the Haudenosaunee to increase their use of wampum beads for ceremonial purposes.
