Which construction and architectural technologies will reshape the industry in the coming years and why is early recognition of these changes important? Architecture and the construction industry like other sectors have been required to embrace technological advances at a growing rate. However, trend analysis showing the exponential growth and adoption of these technological transformations has also found unique challenges and benefits for those known as disruptive technologies. Failure to recognize and prepare for disruptive technology can easily equate to economic obsoleteness. Success in acknowledging and acting on new technological opportunities can result in cutting cost curves, increased productivity, and tremendous growth for both business and sector. This study identifies five primary categories of disruptive innovations and new technologies that are likely to influence the architectural design and the construction industry as follows: autonomous technology, robotics, 3D printing, energy production/storage, and mass timber. These five categories show a high aptitude to disrupt and radically "overtake" the focus of the architectural design. Given their significant growth, these categories are not only challenging market inefficiencies in both the design and construction of new buildings but could potentially eradicate previously established financial and time-oriented benchmarks. The analysis will follow of how each of these sectors will apply into architectural and/or construction industry practices. Successful implementation of new technology into practice will be measured primarily by monetary value and secondarily by indicators such as savings in time, labor, or both. Finally, the study develops one potential outcome of what a sustainable and futuristic building may look like and how it may function.
