The current research hypothesized that Art Therapy, using concepts of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, increases the motivation to quit or remain abstinent from smoking cigarettes by improving mindfulness, and providing coping skills, increasing the likelihood of long standing abstinence. A total of fifteen participants completed the study, eleven women and four men. Quantitative data was gathered using the Avoidance and Inflexibility Scale (AIS) and Cigarette Dependence Scale (CDS). Qualitative data was found in the themes generated in the art experiential (Values Box), as well as from the self-reported surveys and interviews. Results from this study indicate that Art Therapy, using concepts of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy could positively impact the motivation to quit smoking or remain abstinent from smoking cigarettes.
