Strategic planning translates the objectives of a system into actions in order to accomplish its specific goals. A great influence on the profitability of a greenhouse system may be caused by inadequate planning. A microcomputer model consisting of many module programs and databases was developed to support the planning process of a greenhouse system. Each module can be used separately or in combination to facilitate the design, the renovation, and/or the decision-making process of a greenhouse crop production system. The modules are: (1) The crop module which is helpful in estimating crop profitability from the database. (2) The device module which can be used to analyze the economic competitiveness of any two proposed mechanized systems. (3) The layout module which provides a tool for optimal bench and layout design under given constraints. A method to represent any shape of a greenhouse layout is proposed. (4) The simulation module which is helpful in studying the dynamic behavior of a greenhouse internal transport system. (5) The optimization module which is helpful in maximizing the profit on a year-round basis while subject to resource constraints such as labor, budget and space. (6) The engineering economic analysis module which is helpful in estimating the profitability of the business on a long term basis. The manner in which plants are placed in a greenhouse can be analogous to the materials stored in a warehouse. Some basic concepts in designing a warehouse were adopted to develop a new technique for determining the optimum crop placement in greenhouses. The simulation and optimization modules were verified by using a SIMAN/CINEMA model (the animated simulation model) and LINDO (Linear INteractive Discrete Optimizer), respectively.
