This dissertation examines the intellectual tradition of natural religion and its crucial impact on the thought and poetics of two major Romantic poets. Natural religion, defined in contrast to revealed religion, attempts to arrive at the knowledge of God through human reason and the mere light of nature. In the eighteenth century, natural religion gains widespread influence as a mode of perceiving and deriving attributes of the Deity through the 'evidences' of nature; it becomes the dominant form of theology that aims to reconcile the Christian faith with the scientific method of empirical observation, and to absorb an emergent secular and materialist view of nature back into the realm of the sacred. I demonstrate how Blake and Coleridge, in their endeavors to annunciate new representations of nature and conceptualizations of religion, are overdetermined by the tradition of natural religion while they resist and critique its habitual modes of thought.
