In this dissertation, I intend to argue that Arab Women's identities in selected Arab/Arab diasporic women's novels are constructed to resist patriarchal oppressions. The dissertation attempts to explore the way the traditional patriarchy confirms the oppressions against women, but also seeks to show how Arab and Arab diasporic women react to these forms of oppressions in the following ways: rejecting the traditional patriarchy, breaking silence, achieving economic independence, and having freedom over their body. Furthermore, the dissertation scrutinizes the complex social context of the trapped diasporic Arab women who are unable to return to their original countries because of the oppression and discrimination that women face in their countries as well as to the discrimination they face in their diasporic experience. The primary texts that this dissertation examines include the following novels, three of which were originally published in English and two initially published in Arabic. The two published in English were Arabian Jazz (1993) by Diana Abu-Jaber, a diasporic Jordanian female, The Cry of the Dove (2007) by Fadia Faqir, a diasporic Jordanian female writer in the U.K, and West of the Jordan (2003) by Laila Halaby, a diasporic Jordanian female writer in the U.S. The novels first published in Arabic are The Fall of the Imam (1987) by Nawal El Saadawi, an Egyptian female writer, Arabic and Women of Sand and Myrrh (1992) and The Occasional Virgins (2015) by Hanan Al-Shaykh, a diasporic Lebanese female writer in the U.K. While some of the novels under study were originally written in English, others were originally written in Arabic, which means that these novels are meant to be a criticism of the Arab audience.
