This thesis centrally examines the relationship between academia and YouTube video essays. Broadly speaking, video essays are online videos which seek to make an argument about some topic through the use of a voiceover played atop some form of relevant footage. Some video essayists deal with topics that are conventionally the domain of academia, but their audiences far exceed those of traditional scholars. However, outsider status and dependence on the YouTube platform raise potential concerns regarding their credibility. In order to explore some of the ways video essayists frame themselves and their work, Jay David and Bolter Grusin's theory of remediation and its accompanying logics of immediacy and hypermediacy were used to analyze one video essay from each of three video essayists. After determining how each video essayist went about refashioning and representing elements from essay films, academia, branding, casual conversations, and their own subjects, the apparent results of these various stylistic decisions were explained and their possible purposes discussed. These analyses were then combined with information about the functionality of the YouTube platform and prior comments by the video essayists to gain an understanding of their present relationship with academia. It was found that the rise of video essays presently represents both a challenge and an opportunity for academia. Video essayists exist outside of academic systems, meaning that their work is not held to the same rigorous standards as that of academics, while their financial incentives are potentially compromising. However, the affordances of video essays allow them to discuss multimodal texts in unique and interesting ways, while the interest some of them show in visibly aligning themselves with academia suggests the potential for a productive partnership.
