Online support communities have grown in popularity as sources of social support, particularly of nurturant support, which encompasses intangible forms of support such as supporting self-esteem, emotional wellbeing, and the feeling of connectedness and belonging that comes with belonging to a network or social group. The Dual Social Support model suggests that community identification within online support communities is directly tied to the amount of nurturant support drawn. Nurturant support, a measurement of emotional and psychological support, develops in all community groups, including online game communities, where players do not join seeking social support as a goal. This study seeks to explore whether nurturant support is generated within online game communities, how it is generated, and how it affects how players experience community identification. This study used a mixed methods approach combining a survey instrument to examine nurturant support and community identification within online game communities, and semi-structured interviews to draw greater insight to these concepts, and to explore how online game community participants select, interact with, and rely on these communities for support. Results will be discussed, implications will be inferred, and shortcomings will be identified to help direct future research.
