The organizational union of competitive, commercialized athletics within American universities has been a topic of debate. While some call for the thorough integration of athletics into the academy, others disapprove. One could analyze this dynamic from the perspective that some obscurity exists around the purpose of college sports. Among the most adopted notions is that college athletics provide opportunities that bolster the "lifelong success of college athletes" (NCAA, 2015). Although socioeconomic status (SES) is a widespread measure for evaluating quality of life, literature exploring its relationships with college sports is limited. This study contributes to filling this literature gap by analyzing the relationship between athletic participation and generational SES changes among former NCAA Division I student-athletes and nonathletes. This research is significant for evaluating the impact of participation in college sports and answering a much-needed call for updated literature on this topic. The results do not definitively indicate that intercollegiate sports participation is a sufficient form of capital that may be used for SES mobility. This is especially true for racial minorities as their nonathlete counterparts experience higher rates of SES mobility and hold higher current SES standings despite coming from slightly lower SES backgrounds. Meanwhile, White athletes hold higher current SES standings despite experiencing lower rates of mobility than racial minorities. Disparities also exist across gender as female athletes came from higher SES backgrounds yet experienced less mobility and hold lower current standings compared to their male peers. The results of this study have significant implications in understanding the role of athletics within universities.
