It is estimated that nearly 3.6 million people are diagnosed with concussions annually and evidence shows that 30% of those individuals diagnosed with a concussion will have their symptoms persist greater than three weeks, specifically if dizziness is present at the time of injury. Research traditionally encouraged both cognitive and physical rest followed by a gradual return to activity; however, emerging studies suggest that active treatments, such as vestibular rehabilitation therapy and oculomotor rehabilitation therapy, are effective treatment strategies in the treatment of postconcussion symptoms that persist greater than three weeks. The timeliness of starting such treatments has not been systematically investigated. This study sought to examine the relationship between the timeliness of starting physical therapy treatment in individuals diagnosed with a concussion who have complaints of dizziness at the time of their concussion injury and recovery time of postconcussion symptoms. It also sought to investigate the impact of gender and age on recovery of protracted postconcussion symptoms.This study determined that deferring the start of vestibular and/or oculomotor physical therapy rehabilitation treatment greater than four weeks from the time of a concussion injury adds near three weeks to an individual's time undergoing treatment. This study also concluded that deferring the start of vestibular and/or oculomotor physical therapy rehabilitation treatment adds three days to treatment time for each week an individual is not referred for treatment from the date of their concussion injury and exhibited the symptom of dizziness at the time of injury. This study found that the male gender adds four days to treatment time for each week the start of vestibular and/or oculomotor physical therapy rehabilitation treatment is deferred from the time of a concussion injury when dizziness was present at the time of injury. Lastly, this study found that age adds .20 days to treatment time for each week an individual is not referred for treatment from the date of their concussion injury and exhibited the symptom of dizziness at time of injury. Identifying the timeliness of referral for physical therapy treatment of postconcussion symptoms not only assists physician decision-making but aids in the recovery and quality of life for the individual suffering from postconcussion symptoms.
