The US building sector is responsible for 40% of the national energy usage. By implementing energy efficient and renewable technologies, the US can reduce its energy usage and carbon footprint, but many technologies have low adoption rates due to various contributing factors. Some of these factors include general education, cost, and convenience. However, by redefining the building code, increasing education and accessibility, and lowering capital costs, the US can improve the penetration of sustainable technologies in the building sector. Policy is cumbersome and time consuming to change, but through education of energy and capital costs, it is possible to shape the sustainable future. The focus is on a case study of single-family residence and analyze the economic feasibility for energy savings. The chosen home is in Boulder County, Colorado, United States and is analyzed for the cost of multiple economic indicators for specified optimal energy-saving points using NREL's BEopt. IECC 2018 is used as a baseline, Boulder City Code or 20% above the baseline, EEMs without PV, Optimal cost, and net zero as the optimization points. It is found that electrification at 99% energy savings is the most financially optimal for this home in this climate. The same case study is analyzed for passive house certification viability. Using NREL's BEopt, additional features are added to ensure the energy use outputs comply with passive house parameters. It is found that due to the additional capital costs for higher energy efficient measures, the passive house case is less economically optimal than the NZEB options. Overall, the most optimal conditions for this specified house in this climate is an electrified home with marginally better than IECC 2018 energy efficiency measures and a large array of solar. More analysis is needed for other climates and varying homes.
