Among the literary film adaptations found at the intersection of classic literature and modern pop culture, the past few decades have seen many contemporary commercial films based on Shakespearean plays. What are these film adaptations doing for Shakespeare and what is Shakespeare doing for them? I am particularly interested in three turn-of-the-millennium commercial adaptations of tragedies that show a young woman mistreated and dead: Michael Almereyda's Hamlet (2000), Tim Blake Nelson's O (2001), and Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet (1996). I draw on adaptation theory and media studies to explore how Shakespearean tragic heroines are remediated in these market-films, asking what these films reveal about both the plays and contemporary pop culture. The central female adolescent characters in these films, like their respective Shakespearean sources, are humiliated, driven to madness, used as pawns in the plots of men, rejected by lovers or family, and eventually killed by murder or suicide. While the tragic endings of the films mirror those of the plays, I determine how the fates of the film versions of Ophelia, Desi, and Juliet differ, if at all, from their play counterparts. I look at the adolescent ethos of the '90s and early-aughts, along with the scripts of the movies themselves, the films' styling, setting, soundtrack, body language and expression of the actors, as well as marketing and media surrounding the films, to explore what about these female protagonists specifically spoke to filmmakers and continues to resonate with audiences.
