This thesis for the production Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress documents my research, design process, and execution of the costume designs. The production of Trouble in Mind was produced by Tulane University's Department of Theatre and Dance along with the help and collaboration of the production company, No Dream Deferred. No Dream Deferred began in 2016 as a theatre that lives by the morals of fairness and inclusiveness in New Orleans. No Dream Deferred's guide to their mission states (No Dream deferred Nola):Our vision is to employ a revolutionary approach to artmaking in our city and our communities and in doing so create theatre that is anchored to place. We, through our programming and advocacy, are building a future where art leaders of color are not the exception but the norm.The production of Trouble in Mind was performed in Tulane University's Lupin Theatre from November 9 to November 14, 2021. The goal of the costume design for Trouble in Mind delves deep into the world of 1950's America while creating a visual representation of each character's attire. Creating the visual representation of each character's attire began with gathering physical research, visual research, and answering critical questions such as:Did events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and the lynching of Emmett Till influence the way African Americans dress? How did African American Women dress to demand respect?What internal effects do fall colors have on an audience viewing characters on stage?What are social classes and hierarchy systems within 1950s clothing.
