Music ministry in the Christian tradition engages people in the process of growth, both in regard to their musicianship and in their wider formation as human beings and disciples of Christ. This document focuses on the closely related areas of music education and human formation as focal points of this ministry. It recognizes that boundaries between the two are often blurred and frequently need to be crossed. Nonetheless, it seeks to frame a discussion of music ministry around these two significant poles. The first part of this document, focused on education, describes selected examples of music education in the history of the church, various approaches to the philosophy of music education, and several models of Christian education along with their musical application. The second part involves a discussion of the formation of the three stakeholders in the music ministry of the church: the church musician, the pastor, and the congregation. Specific examples of education and formation in the church's music ministry are presented throughout the document.
