The purpose of this study was to explore the role of corporate retail employees in business success during strategic change. Specifically addressing (RQ1) how employees influence business success, (RQ2) how employees' psychologies, including knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors affect business success, and (RQ3) how employees' organizational relationships affect business success all under conditions of strategic change. This study was designed to examine the role of corporate, non-managerial employees in product-oriented and consumer-oriented roles. Two phases of the study were conducted. In the first phase, a modified phenomenological approach was utilized to explore employees' corporate experiences. A series of 16 in-depth interviews were conducted with corporate retail employees. Interviews were transcribed and coded with conceptual labels that allow commonalities to emerge. In the second phase, a national survey was electronically distributed to retail employees resulting in 311 usable responses. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and structural equation modeling were utilized to analyze results and test the hypotheses. Participants across phases worked in corporate functions including buying and merchandising, design, planning, marketing, and store operations. The comprehensive findings suggested that employees are stimulated by strategic change, demonstrating a change orientation that allows them to positively impact the business. The findings of the study revealed that strategic change significantly impacts employees influence in corporate retail environments. Employees have a significant department impact through changes to product strategy, departmental strategies, and the workplace environment. Additionally, the manager-employee relationship directly affected business success through department impact, demonstrating the significance of manager support and exchange with employees. This study demonstrated the importance of employees as business influencers within retail success. The results of this study may be utilized by retailers and academic researchers seeking to understand employees' influence on business performance. Further, the qualitative findings demonstrate the value of empowering retail employees through decision-making control and building manager relationships that move beyond task delegation and towards mentorship.
