As symphony orchestras around the world tackle audience attendance and management issues, programming and marketing decisions become key to ensuring the survival of concert entertainment. Recently, The League of American Orchestras called for a renewed focus among its members stating: "To earn wholehearted community support, orchestras need to act and communicate in new ways. And while there are some actions that can be taken in the near term, changing public perception will require a long-term commitment involving everyone in the organization." For American symphonies to embrace change, they must fundamentally recognize the innate biases that inform their decision making and adopt new frameworks for audience engagement, programming, and financial viability.Since the 1990s, there has been a continued international rise in ludomusic music performance and concerts such as Video Games Live. This is due to the growing cultural norm for gaming and desire for an extension of interactive experiences outside of video game play. This, along with the breadth of academic discourse represented by scholars and ludomusicologists, speaks to the recognition and perpetuation of ludomusic as performance art. However, misconceptions about video games, its culture, purpose, music, and historical relationship to the performing arts must be reconciled. Much like opera in its golden era, video game creation and development encompass an aggregation of art forms and professions that represent the pinnacle of modern artistic collaboration in entertainment. The adoption of ludomusic performance by American symphonies would assist in changing perspectives and addressing the call to represent underserved artists and musicians. In doing so, will further assist in placing concert hall performance back into the zeitgeist of modern culture and help orchestras creatively lead the way in artistic entertainment.Based on the evidence put forth in this paper, performance of ludomusic by American symphony orchestras has and will continue to aid in audience engagement, diversity of programming, and financial viability.
