It has become a notable issue that availability of credit facilities to small businesses increases their level of productive activities and, thus, increase their performance. However, the availability of formal credit facilities to small businesses is still considered very low. Microcredit has also been reported to play an important role in bridging this finance gap, particularly, for small enterprises. However, findings from various studies conducted to examine the impact of micro finance on small business performance have left unanswered questions as to whether microfinance institutions (both formal and informal) are actually playing their role of providing financial facilities and helping small businesses overcome income challenges. This study is conducted to provide valuable information about the ongoing debate, in order to verify the true influence of Village Savings and Loan Associations on the performance of small businesses. The specific objectives of the study were to: analyse the effect of VSLA on small business' income performance, examine the effect of VSLAs' investment training and advice on small business' income performance, determine the impact of VSLA on employment generation by small businesses, identify the impact of VSLAs on the level of children education in the households of small business operators, and examine the influence of VSLAs on health status of small business operators. This study employed survey data which were analysed with both descriptive and inferential approaches, using Stata 14 statistical package. A total of 493 small businesses were sampled. Data for the study were collected through a structured, closed ended, pre-coded and pilot-tested questionnaire. Both ordinary least squares and ordered logit regression methods were employed as the estimation techniques. The findings of the study regarding the first specific objective reveal that financial services of VSLA had positive effect on income performance of small businesses. Also non-financial services of VSLA, such as investment training had positive effects on income performance of small businesses, while advisory services did not affect small business income performance. For the third objective, the findings of the study reveal that, of all indicators considered, only the length of participation with VSLA positively influenced the level of employment created by small businesses, while the other indicators have no effect. The findings in respect to the fourth objective reveal that VSLA factors do not determine the level of children education enrolment in small business operators' households. Regarding the fifth objective, the study found that VSLA factors do not determine the health status of small business operators. The study concludes that VSLAs' financial and non-financial services greatly influenced the performance of small businesses despite the fact that these services have contributed little to the social wellbeing of small business operators and their household members. Wide-ranging recommendations were provided to small business operators, and also to policy makers so the latter could take effort to identify and formalize the almost underground and informal nature of VSLA activities so that VSLAs could gain wider acceptability and increase the confidence of the public in their operations.
