Background: As of 2010, more than 78 million adults in the United States were obese (Jensen et al., 2013). Obesity significantly increases all-cause mortality (Flegal, Kit, Orpana, & Graubard, 2013). Problem: Existing literature supports the impact of a 12-week comprehensive weight management program in achieving clinically significant weight loss. However, the role of the primary care provider (PCP) in this sort of program is inconsistent and poorly defined. Interventions: A single cohort of 29 patients participated in a 12-week comprehensive weight management program directed by their PCP. Methods: Body mass index (BMI) and quality of life (QOL) as indicated by the 36-item short form survey (SF-36) were measured at baseline and 12 weeks. Paired sample t-tests compared means of Week 0 and Week 12 weights, BMI, and QOL scores. Results: By Week 12, the average weight in kilograms (kg) for participants who met all program requirements (n = 13) decreased by 3.2 kg (p ≤ 0.001). The final average BMI was 41.1 kg/m², a reduction of 1.08 kg/m² (p ≤ 0.001). Week 12 SF-36 scores showed statistically significant increases (CI 95%) in three subscales: physical functioning (PF), energy and fatigue (EF), and general health (GH). Mean PF increased from 66.92 (SD = 22.04) to 75.38 (SD = 22.95, p = 0.002). EF scores improved from a mean of 40.38 (SD = 19.52) to 63.85 (SD = 21.33, p = 0.002). GH scores also increased from 48.84 (SD = 14.88) to 63.85 (SD = 13.72, p = 0.001). Conclusion: Participation in a 12-week PCP-directed weight management program can result in statistically significant weight loss, reduction in BMI, and improvement in QOL scores.
