Mr. Pang Xunqin (1906-1985) is an important artist in the art history in the 20th century in China. While comparing and summarizing the historical experience of art in China and in the West, he has made outstanding contributions to contemporary Chinese art in three aspects: painting, arts and crafts, and theoretical research. The study in the West in his early years enabled him to systematically grasp the Western modernism in painting. After returning to China, he devoted himself to the exploration of traditional Chinese decorative elements, creatively integrating what he learned in the West into his artworks. With a large number of works of unique styles, he promoted the development of painting in China and boosted the vitality of Chinese art. Mr. Pang's painting art, which was formed in a special period of cultural and art crises, is founded on the spirit of traditional Chinese art and the integration with Western modernism. It thus explores a painting language marked by a combination of tradition and modernization with reference to the historical facts in different cultural meanings as well as developments of art. The main purpose of this paper is to explore how the artist integrated Chinese painting and Western painting towards innovation.
