This article examines the history of music and arts integration on childhood-age learning processes, with emphases on the cognitive and educational benefits of music. The researcher proposes the question, "What role does music play in a typical elementary classroom?" and investigates the effects of music integration from childhood to adulthood as examined through the lens of many published educational doctors and researchers. The annotated research herein delves into the effects of music on human connection, memory, mood, behavior, autism, culture, and academic success. Additionally, this article contains data examined from a constructed survey in which various teachers in the greater Rochester, NY area provide first-person accounts of the current state of music integration in both public and charter elementary schools. The survey results showed the participants' propensity for utilizing the effects of music integration on students as a group entity rather than focusing on the individual benefits suggested from the literature. Key elements of music integration provided by participants of the survey are the use of music for mood regulation, classroom management, and retention skills in emergent learners. The researcher of this article proposes the notion that many teachers lack the proper skills for arts-integrated teaching and would benefit from further training and collaboration with other professionals in education.
