Danish film director Lars von Trier is known for controversial work, both on-screen and off. His difficult subject matters, public statements and claims about his mistreatment of actors often overshadow his main stylistic trait and contribution to cinema. Throughout von Trier's body of films we see how he continually explores, innovates and repurposes various aspects of film technology. As I propose in this study, von Trier's engagement with technology is an integral part of his filmmaking. Von Trier's filmmaking has always been in opposition to the dominant modes of filmmaking and through his use of technology he seeks to disrupt the current state of cinema and elevate the medium. It is advantageous to look to the avant-garde to see how its rejection of tradition and its use of technology as a disruptive force is a model for von Trier's filmmaking. His well known use of limitations and self-imposed rules as creative stimuli not only connect his filmmaking to avant-garde practices but are also always related to technological concerns. We will see how he uses historical film technologies, the technological reproducibility of film and the automatic possibilities of digital media as creative means to draw attention to the medium and its artificiality. Von Trier treats the medium as material, not only in terms of the physicality of analog film, but also in how various techniques and aspects of digital media manifest themselves visually in his films. Like his frequent use of restrictions, the purpose is to escape from the established aesthetics of commercial cinema and the creation of alternative forms of cinematic expression. Von Trier's filmmaking is in a constant process of regeneration, mainly through the renewal of technological limitations and innovations. That evolving technique, I argue in this study, is von Trier's most significant contribution as a filmmaker.
