Since first appearing on the art scene forty years ago, Sherman's work has been subjected to endless debate. Employing herself as a model in a myriad of stereotypes, which reinforces the incongruity of female representation, gained her immediate attention. Critics believed that they had stumbled upon a visual manifestation of evolving feminist theories. Although the theories carry validity in analyzing Sherman's work, most critics neglected to acknowledge the fragmented formation of identities resulting from social conventions, which has become prominent in the postmodern era, forcing the idea that identity has become necessarily fluid. All of which seems indicative of Sherman's body of work. Viewing her work solely through a feminist perspective is very limiting. Indeed, the social constructs that feminist theories examine are a critical component in the construction of identity and are reflected in her work. However, identity is constructed through more than a conformity to gendered expectations. It is also impacted by conventions such as class, race, education, social status, media, historical bias, and pop culture, to name a few. As we navigate various social contexts, cultures, and sets of ideas, we think and act in accordance with relation to others. We are aware that there are different rules of conduct and different expectations in different contexts. Through this awareness, we construct and reconstruct our identities to assimilate. Within my research, I will examine how Sherman has illustrated the idea that identity is socially constructed, unstable, and inescapably fluid by assuming different stereotypes. While her early work calls into question the voyeuristic gaze and its impact on female identity, it seems to suggest that this identity lies in appearance, not in reality. Throughout her career, her work has continued to suggest that identity is a performance impacted by social conventions. I believe her work is more than just a visual manifestation of theoretical models of the time but is also indicative of how the rapidly changing social conventions have led to the construction of unstable identities, formulating the necessity to embrace a fluid identity as a means of successfully navigating life in the postmodern era.
