This project takes up the study of three Scandinavian artists or artist collectives / collaborations active during the 1950s and '60s: Asger Jorn's writings on the practice of collaboration; the Ex-School, an anti-academy and artist group active in Copenhagen between 1961 and 1972; and Drakabygget (Dragon's House) a group of artists also known as the Second Situationist International. It offers an historical account of the practices of these artists during a temporal framework that spans roughly a decade, from 1961 to 1972. It raises pertinent questions about pedagogy in art practice, questions that are intended to illuminate these artistic investments of the past, but that also might serve to contribute to a deeper understanding of contemporary issues in art practice. Lastly, taking Jorn's theoretical writings on collaboration as a point of departure, it raises a general set of questions about the nature of experimentation and the creative process. Through my research, I aim to articulate the conditions of possibility of such practices - practices that celebrated with unwavering certainty the potential of unrestricted creative expression to operate as a tool for individual and social transformation, along with an equal commitment to truth to materials reminiscent of Russian Constructivism - in order to shed light on a rather unorthodox narrative regarding what was taking place in the mid twentieth century in Northern Europe. Through a closer examination of this all-but-forgotten moment in the history of 1960s artistic radicalism at the margins of the European neo-avant-garde, I hope to surface a set of insights that might serve to uncover a richer understanding of orthodox Modernism itself.
