Primitivism, the short-lived but important movement in art and music in the early twentieth- century had a critical influence on the distinctive compositional voice of major composers of the time. Historically, the literature has focused on Igor Stravinsky and Bela Bartok, while Sergei Prokofiev's compositions have received little attention. In this essay I examine the origin of Primitivism in Russia, known as Neo-Primitivism, and demonstrate how this genre is embedded in Sergei Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto in G Minor, Op.16 (1913). I also seek to achieve a deeper understanding of the core rhythmic and harmonic characteristics of Prokofiev's Scythianism in this composition, features already examined in Bartok's Allegro Barbaro (1911) and Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps (1913). By revealing its barbaric tendencies in a musical analysis, this study endeavors to expose the role of Scythianism, the extreme form of Neo- Primitivisim, in the Second Piano Concerto, and to demonstrate how Prokofiev incorporated these trends in a unique and dramatic work of music. In addition to musical analysis, the historical background presented here through a review of the literature situates the concerto in its historical-cultural context, and links Primitivism to its sub-genres, Scythianism and Neo-Primitivism.
