The statistical treatment of random weakly nonlinear interactions between waves, termed wave turbulence, is fundamental to understanding the development of the ocean surface. For gravity waves, wave turbulence predicts a dual cascade of energy and wave action, which yield power law solutions for the energy spectra and the production of waves across a large range of scales. While the cascades were predicted over fifty years ago, they remain challenging to observe in situ and in laboratory experiments. Here we present early results of the attempted production of the dual cascades in a large circular wave tank. While we did see evidence of a direct cascade of energy, we did not observe an inverse cascade of wave action. We also offer a thorough derivation of the salient equations of wave turbulence and demonstrate the power law spectral solutions. We finally mention future steps towards a successful observation of the dual cascade.
