The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to understand and explain how experiences outside of school motivate ESL international students in their English language learning. Data were collected from 21 participants from 11 different countries using semi-structured interviews. All of the participants had studied in an intensive English program for at least 1 month. The data were then coded using initial, focused, and theoretical coding procedures. Additionally, during the coding process data were analyzed using constant comparative analysis. The central understanding that emerged from this study is that ESL students had past and present experiences as well as future goals outside of the English language classroom that impacted their English study in the United States. Past experiences were those they had prior to their ESL study. Present experiences were those they had while they were an ESL student, and future goals refer to goals they had for after their ESL study. The past motivations, present motivations, and future goals functioned in stages in that the past experiences motivated their present experiences. In the same way, present experiences motivated participants in developing future goals, and the future goals were motivations for participants' present experiences. Namely, prior experiences initiated the motivation to study English in a formal United States setting. Then present experiences built motivation to continue to study English. Finally, a focus on the future sustained motivation for their English study. This study's findings add to TESOL/SLA literature, specifically motivation and international students. More broadly, it adds to the understanding of international students and the communities where international students study.
