The purpose of this study was to examine elementary teacher perceptions of explicit phonics instruction as a tool to teach English Language Learners English as a Second Language. Of particular interest was if the teachers perceived consistent phonics instruction aided in the learning of a second language. This study used a basic qualitative research approach, seeking to learn about the perceptions of the teachers. The researcher interviewed 10 teachers and the interviews were coded and categorized, revealing common themes. The teachers perceived that consistent phonics instruction that occurred at a dedicate time each day was very key in ELLs learning English as second language. In addition, the repetition and practice provided with explicit phonics instruction supported the learning.
