The banking sector is perhaps one of the most important financial intermediaries in any nation due to its ability to provide the capital required for economic activities. However, the decline in banks' financial performance in Africa and the institutional challenges in the continent, coupled with the inability to attract the much-needed investment for economic prosperity, have reduced the banks' ability to stimulate economic activities effectively. Thus, this study examined the effect of economic freedom and institutional quality on banks' financial performance in selected African countries. The specific objectives were to (i) examine the effect of economic freedom on the financial performance of banks; (ii) assess the impact of institutional quality on bank financial performance; (iii) investigate the relationship between business freedom and bank financial performance; (iv) assess the effect of monetary freedom on the financial performance of banks; (v) evaluate the effect of financial freedom on bank financial performance, and (vi) examine the effect of corruption on bank financial performance. The study listed a variant of financial liberalisation model which repeated financial performance on the measures of economic freedom and institutional quality. The study employed an ex post facto research design. The study population consisted of the 1017 banks operating in Africa from 2010 to 2019. The study relied on the Yamane formula to determine the sample size while the purposive sampling technique was employed to select the top 200 banks in Africa in terms of assets, profits and size. Data were collected from secondary sources. The data were sourced from the BankFocus database, the Heritage Foundation and the World Development Indicator. The Variance Inflation Factor was employed to test for multicollinearity among the independent variables while the System Generalised Method of Moment was employed as the estimation technique to test the hypotheses formulated. The findings of the study revealed that: (i) economic freedom with a coefficient of 0.0248672 and P-value of 0.005 has a positive and statistically significant effect on the financial performance of banks; (ii) institutional quality has a coefficient value of 0.4109569 and a P-value of 0.006, indicating that institutional quality positively and significantly affects bank financial performance; (iii) business freedom with a coefficient of 0.0189183 and P-value of 0.021 indicated that business freedom has a positive and significant effect on bank financial performance; (iv) Monetary freedom (0.0027045, P-value 0.042) has a positive effect on bank financial performance; (v) Financial freedom (1.343668, P-value 0.000) has a positive and significant effect on bank financial performance; and (vi) with a coefficient of -0.0107847 and a P-value of 0.049, corruption has a negative effect on banks' financial performance. The study, therefore, concluded that economic freedom, institutional quality, business freedom, monetary freedom, financial freedom, and corruption are significant drivers of bank financial performance. The study recommended, among others, that each nation should put measures in place to improve economic freedom by removing unnecessary barriers to economic liberalisation.
