The participation of women in executive leadership positions and other leadership roles in organizations is exceedingly low, with significantly few women progressing towards managerial careers. The problem addressed by this study is the barriers or effect of racial and gender discrimination on the career advancement of African American women in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry in terms of their lived experiences. This qualitative phenomenological study investigated the lived experiences African American women faced in pursuit of leadership roles, and how barriers can hinder advancement. The theoretical framework involves the perspectives, fundamental issues, and debates about the journey of African American females and how the mentoring process can potentially play a role in breaking the glass ceiling. The research questions of this phenomenological research study were focused on the barriers African American women face as they advanced in their careers. Data was collected from African American women in senior leadership positions in the MICE industry employed in the southern region of the United States. The study findings revealed a philosophical understanding of how mentorship may influence career advancement for African American women. Practical recommendations include mentorship, continuing education, diversity programs, and support and success programs. Recommendations for further study include a study of the leadership characteristics, leadership styles, and competencies of African American women compared to the majority group who tend to achieve executive leadership with less opposition.
