Objective: To investigate if composite resin materials have different optical properties compared to human enamel and dentin and VITA© classical shade tabsMethods: 0.5, 1 and 1.5mm thick, 6mm in diameter disc samples of four composite resins were made using prefabricated molds. Composites selected were A2B/A3B (Filtek Supreme Ultra), A2D/A2E (Ultradent Mosaic), A1E/A2E (Kerr Harmonize) and UE2/UD2 (Micerium EnaHri) (n=120) Samples were tested for Color (CIE LCh coordinates), translucency (TP 76 and TP 2000 values) and refractive index, then compared to their VITA© classical shade tab references, human enamel and dentin.Results: There were statistically significant differences between samples and VITA© shade tab references in all color coordinates. Only dentin samples matched the translucency parameter of enamel and dentin. No sample matched refractive index of human enamelConclusion: VITA© classical shade tabs should not be used for shade selection/match, most samples do not match enamel and dentin optical properties.
