Purpose and Method of Study The purpose of this study was to describe the lived experience of Chinese students attending international schools. A phenomenological approach was used to investigate how Chinese high school students attending international schools in Hong Kong perceive the effect of their schooling on their ethnic identity formation. Findings and Conclusions Three themes emerged: the reasons for selecting an international education, the effects and adjustments required to be successful within the international school system, and how the personal internal and external adjustments played a part in shaping ethnic identity and membership. Significant adjustments are required of students to be successful. They must adjust linguistically as well as culturally. The cultural effects on Chinese students entering an international school are seen in all areas, include interests, hobbies, friendships, outlook, speech, behavior, and even fashion, and music choice. International schooling required them to evaluate the culture they come from and the culture of which they are becoming a part. In that process they must adjust, add, take away, and redefine who they are as Chinese. International schools are producing cross-cultural students who are able to function well within both the Chinese and the western framework. These students are different from the graduates of local schools because they have gone through the process of becoming both local and global. It is a long but rewarding journey. On this journey, the students reconsider their view of themselves as Chinese. Although they are aware of the Chinese cultural expectations, they are also forming a new definition of what it means to be Chinese while also becoming international.
