In "The impact of environmental education on sense of place among urban youth," Kudryavtsev, mentions that "the sense of place-how we perceive a place- includes place attachment and place meaning. Place attachment reflects a bond between people and places, and place meaning reflects symbolic meanings people ascribe to places". When considering a sense of stability, a sense of security, It is a way of thinking about creating the attachment with space. Thus, how to establish a bond with space and how to figure out our meaning in a place? In The Nature of Cities, Adams mentions that "sense of place is the lens through which people experience and make meaning of their experiences in and with the place". Experiences and activities will be the link between people and the place, and they are also important factors for people to recognize their own value. The thesis proposal originated from an abundant housing typology in China which is Collective housing. Prior collective housing can create a sense of home for residents even if the spatial plans and living conditions of the house are simple and crude at that time. However, the collective house could create a sense of place, a sense of stability, a sense of liveliness that are all related to communal activities, and a kind of transparent lifestyle. In exploring this housing typology, I want to identify the relationship between individuals and the collective and How does this sense of home affect people's psychological feeling and life changes in the future. This thesis comes up with an idea of environmental sustainability, space as a method of transitioning from temporary conditions to permanent conditions. With the gradual establishment of a sense of place, people will "grow up" with architecture through the usage of the duality of flexible and static tectonics to define and augment the possibilities of the programmatic components. Homelessness will realize the transformation of identity, from transition to assimilation into society. The selected site Gas Plant is an abandoned building near many companies in Yantai, Shandong, China. The special shape of this building and the historical background of this building provides crucial elements in the project's physicality and symbolic meaning. The design aims to create a sense of safety. Besides, a new idea will be presented, buildings are "growing". As people are alive, buildings can also be seen as alive and they are growing from temporary buildings to permanent ones.
