Translation and interpreting are believed to involve translation shifts, that is, "departures from the formal correspondence in the process of going from the source language to the target language" (Catford, 1965: 73). Syntactic shift is the changing of word sequence in a sentence. To be able to cope with syntactic shift is one of the important abilities of a translator or interpreter. Although syntactic shift has been widely discussed in linguistics, how the mind works to deal with the translation problem of syntactic shift remains an unanswered question in cognitive translation studies. The present study offers a psycholinguistic insight to the question.This project investigates the role of syntactic processing in translating from L1 to L2.Specifically, it tries to find out whether there is a cognitive effort difference in mapping canonical versus non-canonical syntactic structures (structures presenting syntactic shift) in translating from L1 to L2. This study also examines how bilinguals with different levels of translation training and language competence deal with the problem of syntactic shift. Levelt's speaking model and Lexical Mapping Theory(from Lexical Functional Grammar) is used as the framework to model syntactic processing. Participants, who were college students with L1 Chinese L2 English, were recruited to complete a cross-modal sentence translation recognition task, which comprised audio L1 sentences (source) and visual L2 sentences (target)requiring participants to judge whether the target sentence was the translation of the source sentence. Participants' response time and eye movement data were collected and analyzed. Findings show that the translation involving syntactic shifts required more effort than those without syntactic shift. Computing non-canonical syntactic structures was more effortful than computing canonical ones. Participants with better training in translation and interpreting, or with higher language competence especially L2 competence, were found to have quicker response times. Findings are explained in psycholinguistic accounts about language comprehension, language production and syntactic priming. Development of the second language and its relationship to the usage of working memory are also discussed in the thesis.
