The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the professional identity experiences of dual credentialed art therapy and counseling supervisors. Previous research has demonstrated an increasing tendency for art therapists to seek counseling licensure in support of professional growth and opportunity. This has also led to these dual-credentialed clinicians providing supervision to both art therapists and counselors; however, we do not yet know the experiences of dual-credentialing for their own professional identity let alone that of their supervisees. This study sought to answer the question about the experiences of professional identity for dual-credentialed art therapists who are supervising both art therapy and counseling trainees. A generic qualitative approach was used as the research methodology for this question. The target population was dual credentialed art therapy supervisors with experience supervising both art therapy and counseling trainees who would be representative of the profession of art therapy. The sample included 10dual-credentialed art therapists who had a minimum of five years of supervisory experience who were located in Eastern, Midwestern and Western states. Participants engaged in semistructured interviews that were recorded and transcribed. Data were coded manually, and thematic analysesled to the emergence of four underlying themes: supervisor identity, art-based supervision, supervision approaches for art therapy versus counseling, and motivation to become a supervisor. These themes led to conclusions about the professional identity experiences of dual-credentialed supervisors and the significance of using art-based techniques and maintaining their art therapist/practitioner identity as they make contributions to the professions of art therapy and counseling through supervision. Future research comparative study could explore the impact of art-based supervision on the professional identity of art therapists and counselors.
