As young adult literature rapidly increased in popularity over the last 30 years, the YA novel became a legitimate genre for literary discussion. When examining why the explosion in popularity occurred, psychological theory led the way for the genre's arrival in academic conversations. However, psychological theory alone is not enough to explain the lasting appeal of the genre. Through the examination of what the YA novel achieves I discovered that it is in the way the novels promote the development of empathy in readers to pave the way for the reader to experience a sense of kinship within the text that the true power of the young adult novel lies. Recognizing this ability in YAL allows secondary teachers to refine their teaching practice while using a YA novel to focus and guide students towards the development of empathy so they are able to experience a sense of belonging within the text, thus becoming more invested in the reading.
