Mental health concerns among students continue to rise and teachers need cost-effective measures to implement social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculum in the classroom. The CDE (2020) mandates SEL to be "woven into the work of every teacher in every classroom," however, prioritizing and integrating SEL curriculum is challenging for classroom teachers. School-based mental health practitioners provide services for students who have intense needs. The present mental health care approach in schools is reactive, and there is a need to proactively broaden wellness promotion within classrooms. Schools are an ideal setting to provide prevention practices because of the collaborative opportunities with other specialists, educators, and school-based mental health practitioners. Developmental bibliotherapy is a recommended approach for the classroom that can target the five SEL competency domains. This approach can be integrated in the classroom environment and become a preventive approach to support student well-being. A meta-analysis revealed that effective SEL classroom practices are those delivered by the teacher and follow SAFE practices: sequential, activity, focus, and explicit (Durlak et al., 2011). Books are part of the learning environment and school librarians can facilitate the book selection process. This doctoral project provided a literature review on bibliotherapy, social and emotional learning (SEL), and recommended teacher guidelines for classroom bibliotherapy by implementing it with the SAFE criteria.
