Auditory event-related potentials (AERPs) were recorded from 2 groups of adults: (1) Learning Disabled (LD) college students, and (2) a normal comparison group of college students. Two paradigms, Mismatch Negativity (MMN) and P300, which are thought to reflect passive and active aspects of attention respectively, were used. During the MMN paradigm, subjects were instructed to attend to a video tape while listening to a low probability tone (target, p = 0.20, 2000 Hz) and a high probability tone (non-target, p = 0.80, 1000 Hz). Subjects were instructed to press a counter to a low probability tone (target, p = 0.20, 2000 Hz) and to ignore a high probability tone (non-target, p = 0.80, 1000 Hz), during the P300 paradigm. Each paradigm was repeated in order to calculate test-retest reliabilities. The MMN paradigm failed to elicit waveforms with a distinct morphology. The amplitude and latency of the N100 and P300 components that resulted from the P300 paradigm were analyzed at three midline scalp sites (Fz, Cz, and Pz). The latency of the P300 component did differentiate between the two groups, with the adult LDs having significantly longer latencies at Fz (p $<$.0175) and Cz (p $<$.0487) during the first presentation of auditory stimuli, while scalp site Pz approached significance (p $<$.0686). During the second presentation of stimuli differences that approached significance were found at Cz (p $<$.0893) and Pz (p $<$.085). No significant amplitude differences of the P300 component were seen. Test-retest reliabilities of P300 amplitudes for the three scalp sites resulted in a mean amplitude correlation of.84, while the latency correlations yielded a mean correlation of.27 for scalp sites Fz, Cz, and Pz.
